GSM Co-Investors and Nutrition Advisors LLC (“GSM”) was founded by Greg Horn, Steve Allen and Martin Murrer to provide integrated strategic, operational and financial advisory services to high-growth nutrition and health focused food, beverage and services companies or their acquirers.
Greg Horn is CEO of Specialty Nutrition Group, a creator of branded and scientifically validated nutrition products. Greg is former CEO of both leading branded specialty retailer General Nutrition Corporation and of leading natural channel brand Garden of Life. He currently is an advisor to several nutrition-focused private equity firms and serves on several boards as a director and occasionally as Chairman. Greg is a principal of Nutrition Capital Networks “NCN” and Chairman of the NCN Selection Committee.
Steve Allen is a Co-Founder of NCN and former Vice-President of Nestlé where his most recent responsibilities were as a senior business development officer and in charge of Nestlé's New Venture and Nutritional Investments portfolio. Steve serves on numerous public and private company boards and is the Managing Partner of California Nut Orchards.
Martin Murrer is a Senior Advisor for Canaccord Genurity, a global investment bank focused on mergers, acquisitions, divestitures and public offerings. Previously, Marty ran the middle market merger & acquisition practice at Merrill Lynch and built the exclusive sale practice at DLJ. He was also a partner at AEA Investors where he co-lead the firm’s consumer products practice. He has negotiated the sale of over 100 companies, raised over $50 billion in equity capital for companies and been a lead principal in businesses with collective enterprise values of over $5 billion.
Matthew is an accomplished innovation executive with over 20 years of success at Abbott, Nestle, and the Ecole Polytechnique Federal de Lausanne. He is focused on driving growth-phase market opportunities across the food, nutrition, and well-being sectors. He learns by doing, which means that in addition to managing he enjoys riding with the sales force, working a shift in the factory, and participating in the laboratory whenever possible. He has achieved outstanding results, in commercial and research functions, leading to successful introduction of new food products, science, and technology which then delivered real business results in the marketplace. His acquisitions have resulted in significant structural shifts in the nutrition industry. He also has significant experience in corporate innovation strategy, stage gate processes, and corporate partnerships. He has also served on the board of directors of several privately-held food and beverage companies As a scientist, Matthew managed a variety of teams & projects with significant annual budgetary responsibility. He is the author of 34 peer-reviewed scientific publications, 11 professional publications, holds 4 patents, and is the editor on a scientific book. He has presented at over 75 international presentations at various life & food science conferences. He has taught 2 graduate level courses and mentored 4 Ph.D. students as an industrial advisor and thesis committee member. Matthew is a former Volunteer Fireman, an Army Veteran of Foreign Wars, and enjoys Hiking, Running, Yoga, and Combat Sports. He is married and has 3 children.
